President Prabowo Subianto expressed global concerns over the potential outbreak of a third world war, including the possibility of nuclear conflict. He warned that if a nuclear war were to occur, even countries not directly involved, such as Indonesia, would face severe consequences, particularly from the spread of radioactive contamination.
Speaking at the 2026 National Coordination Meeting between the central and regional governments at the Sentul International Convention Center in Bogor on Monday (February 2, 2026), Prabowo said simulations show that the impact of nuclear warfare would be unavoidable and global in scale, affecting neutral nations as well.
He explained that radioactive particles could pollute Indonesian waters, contaminate marine life, and trigger a “nuclear winter,” as dust from explosions could block sunlight worldwide. Experts, he noted, estimate that such conditions could last not just a few years, but potentially for decades, posing serious threats to ecosystems and human survival.
For this reason, Prabowo emphasized the importance of Indonesia maintaining its role as a free and active nation committed to global peace. He reaffirmed that Indonesia’s foreign policy remains non-aligned and non-bloc, and that the country will not join any military alliance.
