WhatsApp Account Suddenly Blocked? Here’s How to Recover It

Berita Terkini - Posted on 06 August 2026 Reading time 5 minutes

WhatsApp users in several countries reported losing access to their accounts without prior warning on August 3, 2026.

Instead of their normal chat screen, affected users saw notices saying their account was “under review” or could no longer use WhatsApp. Some review screens said that account activity and device information were being checked and that a result would typically be available within 24 hours.

The exact number of affected accounts remains unknown. WhatsApp has also not publicly identified all affected countries or disclosed the technical event that triggered the sudden wave of reviews.

First: Check What Message You Received

Not every restriction means the same thing.

An “Account under review” notice generally means WhatsApp is temporarily examining the account’s activity and device information.

A message saying “This account can’t use WhatsApp” indicates that the platform believes the account may have violated its Terms of Service. Users who believe the decision was incorrect may be given an option to request a review.

Temporary restrictions, reviews, and permanent bans should therefore not be treated as identical situations.

What Meta Has Said

WhatsApp uses abuse-detection systems to identify spam, scams, fraud, unauthorised software, and activity that could threaten other users.

Meta has acknowledged that mistakes can occur while those systems are trying to stop abuse. According to reporting on the August incident, the company said it had taken action to restore accounts affected by incorrect decisions.

Meta did not specify how many accounts were restored or whether the incident was linked to a software update, a new anti-spam model, or another internal change.

Reports from users who said they only used the official app suggest that at least some legitimate accounts may have been incorrectly flagged.

Your Immediate Recovery Checklist

Request a review inside WhatsApp

Tap Request a review on the restriction screen.

WhatsApp will examine the account and notify you after making a decision. Third-party services cannot remove the restriction because only WhatsApp controls account bans and restorations.

Allow the review to finish

Some affected users were told that the process would typically take around 24 hours. This is an expected timeframe rather than a guaranteed deadline.

Avoid repeatedly registering the number, switching between several versions of WhatsApp, or paying an unofficial “account recovery” service.

Keep another communication channel available

Use SMS, phone calls, email, or another messaging service while access is unavailable.

Businesses should also notify customers through another channel and avoid storing their only copy of customer contacts or transaction records inside WhatsApp.

Why Could a Legitimate Account Be Flagged?

WhatsApp says accounts may be blocked when activity appears to involve spam, fraud, or risks to other users.

Unusual account behaviour can also resemble an account takeover. For example, changing devices repeatedly within a short period may trigger additional scrutiny.

Other risk signals may include:

  • Sending identical messages to many unfamiliar numbers.

  • Receiving an unusually high number of blocks or reports.

  • Using modified apps such as GB WhatsApp.

  • Connecting unauthorised automation or bulk-messaging tools.

  • Logging in and out across several devices.

  • Linking the account to an unfamiliar computer.

WhatsApp has introduced warnings designed to detect suspicious device-linking attempts. These alerts are intended to stop scammers from tricking users into scanning a QR code or entering a linking code that connects the victim’s account to the scammer’s device.

Is the Username Rollout Responsible?

WhatsApp began rolling out username reservations in late June 2026. The feature allows users to reserve a handle, although a phone number is still required to create an account.

The source material supplied for this article cites Indonesian cybersecurity expert Alfons Tanujaya as suggesting that username-system changes, desktop activity, device switching, and repeated logins could be contributing signals.

Claims that an Adobe extension vulnerability caused the bans are also unconfirmed. WhatsApp’s separately disclosed June 2026 spyware incident involved targeted spear-phishing attempts, not evidence of a global mass-account takeover.

Secure the Account After Access Returns

Once the account is restored, take a few minutes to review its security.

Turn on two-step verification

Open:

Settings → Account → Two-step verification

Create a PIN and attach a current recovery email.

WhatsApp’s Strict Account Settings can also apply more restrictive security defaults, including two-step verification and stronger limitations on unknown senders.

Review linked devices

Open the Linked Devices menu and log out any computer, browser, or device you do not recognise.

Never scan a QR code or provide a device-linking code to someone claiming to represent WhatsApp.

Protect every verification code

Do not share an OTP, two-step verification PIN, or device-linking code.

A scammer who obtains these credentials may be able to register or connect to the account.

Back up important information

Enable automatic chat backups and end-to-end encrypted backups where available.

Business contacts, invoices, order records, and critical phone numbers should also be kept in another secure system.

Reduce the Risk of Another Restriction

The Vaksincom guidance included in the original material recommends extra caution for two to four weeks after recovery.

Practical precautions include limiting broadcasts, avoiding bulk messages, delaying unnecessary device changes, and using only the official WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business application.

Users should also avoid sending unsolicited promotional messages. A pattern of blocks and reports from recipients can make otherwise legitimate activity resemble spam.

Watch Out for Fake Recovery Services

Account restrictions create an opportunity for scammers.

No legitimate WhatsApp representative should ask for your OTP, security PIN, QR code, remote access to your phone, or payment to “unlock” the account.

Use the in-app review process and WhatsApp’s official support channels. After recovery, inspect linked devices and recent messages to determine whether anyone used the account without permission.
