How the IDX Trading Halt Works When the JCI Falls Sharply

Edukasi - Posted on 22 October 2026 Reading time 5 minutes

A trading halt is a temporary pause in broad market trading when the JCI reaches a specified decline trigger. It is designed to support orderly markets and give participants time to absorb information. On January 29, 2026, IDX announced a halt after the JCI fell 8% and said trading would resume 30 minutes later.

A pause does not predict prices

While trading is halted, investors cannot execute regular transactions. After the market reopens, prices respond to supply, demand, and incoming information. A halt does not guarantee a recovery or automatically mean stocks should be sold. Decisions still depend on an investor's goals and risk plan.

Distinguish a market halt from a suspension of an individual stock. A halt is triggered by index movement and affects broad trading; a suspension restricts a specific security. Both differ from delisting, which changes a company's listing status.

What investors can do

Check official IDX announcements, confirm which measure is in effect, and review cash needs and investment horizon. Avoid making decisions based only on group-chat rumors or a brief index move.
