Google once again eradicates harmful apps from the Play Store. This time, Google has removed 12 dangerous apps that had been downloaded more than two million times in total.

These mischievous apps were discovered by the cybersecurity solutions provider Dr. Web. In their latest report, Dr. Web analysts identified trojan apps associated with the malware families FakeApp, Joker, and HiddenAds.

Among the 12 apps, one that raises particular concern is 'Super Skibydi Killer.' This app disguises itself as adware while claiming to be a game and has been downloaded more than one million times.

Dr. Web explains that when Android users install this app on their devices, it hides itself by changing its icon to look like Google Chrome or by using a transparent icon image, making it challenging to detect.

Once installed, this adware operates silently in the background, immediately opening the browser to display ads and generate revenue for its operators.

Here is a list of adware apps that masqueraded as games:

  1. Super Skibydi Killer - 1,000,000 downloads
  2. Agent Shooter - 500,000 downloads
  3. Rainbow Stretch - 50,000 downloads
  4. Rubber Punch 3D - 500,000 downloads

Dr. Web analysts also found several apps related to the FakeApp malware, which directed users to fraudulent investment websites. Some apps also contained suspicious online casino sites that violated Google Play policies.

Some of the mentioned game apps include:

  1. Eternal Maze (Yana Pospyelova) - 50,000 downloads
  2. Jungle Jewels (Vaibhav Wable) - 10,000 downloads
  3. Stellar Secrets (Pepperstocks) - 10,000 downloads
  4. Fire Fruits (Sandr Sevill) - 10,000 downloads
  5. Cowboy's Frontier (Precipice Game Studios) - 10,000 downloads
  6. Enchanted Elixir (Acomadyi) - 10,000 downloads

Furthermore, Dr. Web's report highlighted two apps from the Joker malware family on Google Play. These apps are characterized by coercing users into subscribing to premium paid services without their knowledge.

The two mentioned apps are:

  1. Love Emoji Messenger (Korsinka Vimoipan) - 50,000 downloads
  2. Beauty Wallpaper HD (fm0989184) - 1,000 downloads

All the apps mentioned in Dr. Web's report have been removed from the Play Store by Google. However, users who have already installed them are urged to promptly delete these apps from their devices.

Additionally, for added protection, Android users are advised to scan their devices thoroughly using Play Protect and antivirus apps.
