DIGIVESTASI - Indonesia has been officially recognized as one of the 13 partner countries in the BRICS group, an alliance consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. This alliance collectively accounts for about one-fifth of global trade. The information was confirmed through a recent post on the @BRICSInfo account on the social media platform X on Thursday (October 24, 2024). "BRICS has officially added 13 new countries as partner nations," the post read.

However, Indonesia has not joined as a permanent member. BRICS partner countries, including Indonesia, do not have voting rights in the bloc’s decisions, are not required to fully participate in summits or other meetings, and do not hold full commitments or representation.

In addition to Indonesia, 12 other countries have also become BRICS partners: Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam. Outside the founding members, BRICS currently includes other members such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Citing reports from Russian media, TASS, Kremlin Aide Yury Ushakov stated that these thirteen countries are undergoing consultations regarding their BRICS partner status. Further discussions will be held to determine whether these countries are ready to become full members.

"The status of partner countries is being discussed by the delegations, and this will be considered by the BRICS leaders," Ushakov explained.

BRICS partner countries are only allowed limited participation in BRICS affairs. They can still engage in other international initiatives without being fully committed to BRICS. Although there is potential for full membership in the future, the appointment process is not immediate due to several reasons known to the alliance.

As of the publication of this news, there has been no official response from Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding Indonesia’s status as a BRICS partner country. CNBC Indonesia is still trying to reach the relevant ministry for comment.

Previously, President Prabowo Subianto sent Foreign Minister Sugiono to attend the BRICS Plus Summit 2024 in Kazan, Russia, on October 23-24, 2024, following an invitation from the Russian Presidency. In a press release, Sugiono attended as the President's Special Envoy.

"The presence of Foreign Minister Sugiono at this forum underscores Indonesia's commitment to remain active in international forums and strengthen relations with BRICS member countries," stated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

At the meeting, Indonesia will also deliver an important message on peace and call on developing countries and the Global South to unite, strengthen solidarity, and play a key role in creating a more inclusive, just, and equal world order, the ministry added.
