Indonesia's Rp100,000 Notes Signed by Purbaya and Perry Draw Collector Interest

An ordinary-looking Rp100,000 banknote has unexpectedly become a talking point among Indonesian collectors.

The attraction is not a redesigned portrait or a printing error.

It is the combination of two signatures: former Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa and former Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo.

Notes printed in 2026 carrying those names have drawn attention on social media after both officials left the positions printed beneath their signatures.

But Bank Indonesia has made one thing clear: the notes remain perfectly valid money.

Bank Indonesia Says the Notes Are Legal Tender

Bank Indonesia said rupiah notes printed in 2026 with Purbaya and Perry's signatures were produced under established currency-management procedures.

They remain legal tender throughout Indonesia even though the two officials are no longer in office.

A change in finance minister or central-bank governor does not invalidate banknotes already produced and circulated.

This means a Rp100,000 note carrying those signatures continues to have the same official face value as another valid Rp100,000 note.

It Is a 2022 Series Note, Not a New 2026 Series

One detail has caused some confusion.

The note is not a new 2026 emission.

It belongs to Indonesia's 2022 banknote series, which Bank Indonesia and the government launched in August 2022.

The Rp100,000 denomination officially entered circulation on August 17, 2022.

The viral examples simply have a 2026 printing year.

So the correct description is:

Series/Emission Year: 2022
Printing Year: 2026
Denomination: Rp100,000

That distinction can be particularly important for collectors.

Why Do Indonesian Notes Carry Two Officials' Signatures?

Indonesian currency law requires paper rupiah to include signatures representing both the government and Bank Indonesia.

According to BI's explanation, the government's signature is represented by the finance minister and the central bank's signature by the governor of Bank Indonesia.

The signatures therefore correspond to the officeholders involved when the banknote is approved and produced.

That is why banknotes can continue circulating with the names of officials who later leave office.

The Timing Made This Combination Interesting

Purbaya took over as Indonesia's finance minister in September 2025.

His tenure ended roughly one year later, when Suahasil Nazara took over the position in September 2026.

Perry Warjiyo also left the central-bank governorship in 2026.

Destry Damayanti was formally sworn in as Bank Indonesia governor on September 2, 2026 for the 2026–2031 term.

The relatively narrow overlap between Purbaya's tenure and the 2026 printing year has helped fuel collector interest in notes carrying the Purbaya-Perry combination.

Is the Note Actually Rare?

That question does not yet have an official answer.

Bank Indonesia has confirmed the notes' authenticity and legal status, but it has not declared this signature combination rare or announced an official collector classification for it.

Media reports describe people and collectors searching for the notes, but market interest should not automatically be equated with verified scarcity.

True numismatic rarity usually depends on factors such as surviving quantity, production volume, condition, serial numbers and collector demand.

Without official circulation or production data specific to this combination, claims that it is extremely rare remain speculative.

Is It Worth More Than Rp100,000?

As currency, the answer is straightforward.

Its official value remains Rp100,000.

Bank Indonesia's regulation for the 2022 Rp100,000 note states that its value is the nominal amount printed on the note.

A collector can theoretically offer more than face value in a private transaction, but that is a separate market.

Bank Indonesia does not guarantee a premium price.

Nor has BI stated that every 2026-printed note signed by Purbaya and Perry will become more valuable.

Collector Value and Legal Value Are Different

This distinction matters.

Legal value is what the note is worth as money: Rp100,000.

Collector value is whatever another person may be willing to pay for a particular specimen.

Collector prices can be influenced by condition, unusual serial numbers, scarcity, printing variations and demand.

A viral social-media trend alone does not establish long-term numismatic value.

The Design Has Not Changed

The underlying Rp100,000 design remains the 2022 version.

It features Indonesia's independence proclamators Soekarno and Mohammad Hatta on the front.

The reverse includes the Betawi Mask Dance, Raja Ampat scenery and the Moon Orchid.

The note measures 151 by 65 millimeters and uses cotton-fiber material.

In other words, the collector interest is centered on the printing year and signatures, not a different visual design.

Why Old Signatures Do Not Make a Note Invalid

Currency production takes place through an administrative and manufacturing process.

Once a note has been legitimately produced and put into circulation, a subsequent change of officeholder does not retroactively cancel it.

BI specifically said changes to the finance minister or central-bank governor do not affect the validity of rupiah that has already been produced and circulated.

Future production will adjust to officials holding office according to the applicable stages of currency management.

This is why notes carrying former officials' signatures can coexist with later printings.

Who Holds the Offices Now?

Indonesia's finance minister is now Suahasil Nazara, following the September 2026 transition from Purbaya.

Bank Indonesia is now led by Destry Damayanti, who formally took office as governor on September 2.

Future banknote production will reflect the officials applicable to the production and approval process under Indonesian currency rules.

Bottom Line

The Rp100,000 notes attracting collector attention are genuine Indonesian currency.

They belong to the 2022 emission series but were printed in 2026 and carry signatures from Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa and Perry Warjiyo.

Bank Indonesia says they remain valid legal tender despite both officials having left their respective positions.

What has not been established is that they are officially rare or guaranteed to appreciate in value.

For now, their appeal comes from an unusual combination of printing year and former officeholders' signatures.

For everyday transactions, however, one fact does not change:

Rp100,000 is still Rp100,000.
