DIGIVESTASI - Corruption as a Global Problem: World's Highest Corruption Index Announced. Corruption is considered an abuse of power that harms democratic institutions, slows economic growth, and threatens government stability. The practice has become a serious global problem, undermining the foundations of nations.
In January 2024, Transparency International released the 2023 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), which shows the 10 countries with the highest levels of corruption. The index uses a scale of 0-100, where higher numbers indicate cleaner conditions from corruption.
Indonesia ranked 65th with a score of 34, below the global average of 43, signaling the high level of corruption in the country. Here is the list of countries with the lowest CPI scores:
1. Somalia - With a CPI score of 11, Somalia is ranked as the most corrupt country. Political instability and ongoing conflicts contribute to high levels of corruption.
2. Venezuela - Ranked second with a score of 13, Venezuela suffers from corruption and nepotism that is detrimental to the economy, especially in the context of falling oil prices.
3. Syria - Syria, also with a score of 13, is mired in corruption due to an authoritarian regime that reduces accountability and transparency.
4. South Sudan - With a CPI score of 13, corruption in South Sudan is exacerbated by a complicated government system and international arms trade networks.
5. Yemen - A CPI score of 16 indicates high levels of corruption, caused by prolonged conflict and political instability.
6. Nicaragua - This country, ranked sixth with a score of 17, has a long history of corrupt practices under the US-backed Somoza regime.
7. North Korea - With a CPI score of 17, corruption in North Korea is linked to centralized control and lack of transparency.
8. Haiti - Ranked eighth with a score of 17, Haiti is experiencing a political crisis that exacerbates corruption and hampers public finances.
9. Turkmenistan - Despite being rich in natural resources, Turkmenistan ranks ninth with a CPI score of 17, due to non-transparent management.
10. Libya - With a CPI score of 18, Libya faces a political crisis and widespread corruption following the 2011 revolution.
Corruption in these countries shows how important international efforts to combat abusive practices are to maintain global stability.
