President Prabowo Subianto has set a target for Indonesia to no longer rely on imported fuel (BBM) within the next two to three years.

“Perhaps in the next 2–3 years, we will no longer need to import fuel at all. We have great potential, and if we are truly committed, we will become self-sufficient, strong, and able to stand on our own feet,” Prabowo said while inaugurating the electric bus and truck manufacturing plant of PT VKTR Sakti Industries in Magelang, Central Java, on Thursday (April 9, 2026).

This target is aligned with efforts to transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.

Prabowo expressed optimism that the goal can be achieved through several strategic initiatives that have been planned, including a 100 Gigawatt (GW) electrification program within two years.

Through this program, the government intends to gradually phase out power plants that rely on diesel and solar fuel.

“In the future, there should no longer be any power plants using diesel or solar fuel. With this policy, we will shut down 13 diesel power plants operated by PLN,” Prabowo stated.

He further explained that closing these plants would allow the country to save approximately 200,000 barrels of crude oil per day.

Currently, Indonesia still imports around 1 million barrels of crude oil daily.

“By shutting down diesel power plants, we can immediately save about 20 percent. Combined with the 100 gigawatt program, the savings will be extremely significant,” Prabowo added.
