DIGIVESTASI - Attorney General’s Office to Appeal Harvey Moeis Corruption Case Verdict, Prabowo Demands Harsher Punishment, The Attorney General's Office (AGO) has responded to President Prabowo Subianto's statement urging that the sentence for Harvey Moeis, convicted in the tin commodity corruption case, be increased to 50 years in prison. Currently, Harvey has been sentenced by the Corruption Crimes Court (Tipikor) at the Central Jakarta District Court to 6.5 years in prison, significantly lighter than the prosecutors' demand for a 12-year sentence.
The Head of the Legal Information Center at the AGO, Harli Siregar, stated that the office is in the process of appealing to the Jakarta High Court against the verdict, which is deemed too lenient. Harli emphasized that every prosecutorial demand is based on legal statutes.
"Prosecution against offenders, including in corruption cases, is grounded in legislation. We remain responsive to public sentiments for justice, hence legal measures are being pursued," Harli explained on Monday (30/12/2024).
Harli noted that the state suffered a loss of up to IDR 300 trillion due to the tin commodity corruption case involving Harvey Moeis. Given the lighter-than-expected verdict, the AGO ensures that the appeal process is already underway.
President Prabowo Subianto, during his speech at the 2024 National Development Planning Meeting (Musrenbang) at the Bappenas Building, criticized the lenient sentence Harvey Moeis received. He reminded judges not to impose light penalties on corruptors who cause significant losses to the state. Prabowo argued that the public perceives lighter sentences for corruptors as unjust.
"I urge law enforcers, especially judges: if it’s clear that someone has violated the law and caused trillions of rupiah in state losses, do not issue light sentences," he said.
Prabowo also criticized the comfortable lifestyles often associated with corrupt convicts in prison. He called on the Minister of Correctional Services and the Attorney General to ensure a harsher penalty for Harvey Moeis through the appeal process, even proposing a sentence of up to 50 years.
"File the appeal, yes. If possible, let the sentence be 50 years," Prabowo insisted.
