Google co-founder Sergey Brin believes that the company can reach Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) faster if employees put in more effort and spend more time in the office.
He stated that the optimal work duration for peak productivity is 60 hours per week, although he does not want employees to exceed that limit.
"60 hours a week is the peak of productivity," Brin wrote in an internal memo, as reported by The New York Times.
In a memo addressed to Google's Gemini AI team, Brin emphasized that the competition in AI development is intensifying, and the company is currently in a race to achieve AGI.
"I believe we have all the ingredients to win this race, but we must increase our efforts," Brin stated, as quoted by PCMag on Wednesday (March 5, 2025).
He also urged employees to work from the office every weekday, despite Google's official return-to-office policy requiring only three days per week.
Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) refers to a form of AI that can match or even surpass human cognitive abilities. Unlike conventional AI, which is designed for specific tasks, AGI can comprehend and apply knowledge across multiple domains, just like humans.
Google's AI team is already accustomed to grueling workloads. According to Prabhakar Raghavan, head of Google Search, the Gemini AI team once worked up to 120 hours a week to fix issues in Google's image recognition system.
