Former U.S. President Donald Trump has intensified his warnings toward Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, hinting that the Ukrainian leader "won’t last long" unless he agrees to a ceasefire deal with Russia.
This latest threat follows a dramatic confrontation at the White House last Friday, where Trump reportedly expelled Zelensky after a heated exchange in front of the media.
On Monday (March 3), Trump once again criticized Zelensky, reacting to the Ukrainian president’s statement that the war with Russia could last for an extended period.
Trump insisted that Zelensky should be more appreciative of the billions of dollars in military aid that the U.S. has provided to Kyiv over the past three years to support its fight against Russian aggression.
He argued that Zelensky should cooperate with Washington’s proposed ceasefire agreement, which he claimed was "not difficult to achieve."
"A ceasefire deal could be made very quickly. Now, maybe there’s someone who doesn’t want to make a deal, and if there is someone who refuses peace, I think that person (Zelensky) won’t last long," Trump said in an interview quoted by AFP.
"He won’t be heard for too long because I believe Russia wants a deal, and I’m also sure the Ukrainian people want one too," he added.
Following his tense U.S. visit, Zelensky met with European leaders in the UK over the weekend. During the meeting, he stated that an end to Russia’s invasion was still far from sight.
Trump lashed out at Zelensky for this remark, criticizing him via his Truth Social platform.
"This is the worst statement Zelensky could make. America will not tolerate this much longer," Trump posted.
"This guy doesn’t want peace as long as he keeps receiving American support," he added.
Trump also accused European leaders of weakness, saying they "openly admitted they couldn’t do their job without the U.S."
"Not the best statement to show strength against Russia. What were they thinking?" Trump questioned on Truth Social.
The escalating tensions between Trump and Zelensky reached a boiling point after their White House meeting turned into a public shouting match.
Trump and U.S. Vice President JD Vance accused Zelensky of being disrespectful and ungrateful for American military aid. Meanwhile, Zelensky continued to demand security guarantees from the U.S. as part of any ceasefire deal.
The situation deteriorated to the point where Zelensky was asked to leave the White House. As a result of the fallout, a crucial agreement granting Washington special access to Ukraine’s mineral resources remained unsigned.
