DIGIVESTASI - President-Elect Donald Trump Plans to Impose Additional Tariffs on Imports from China, Mexico, and Canada, President-elect Donald Trump plans to impose a 10% additional tariff on all goods imported from China to the United States (US). Additionally, goods from Mexico and Canada will be subject to an additional 25% tax. This information was shared through a post by Trump on the Truth Social media platform, as reported by CNBC on Tuesday (November 26, 2024). The official announcement of this policy is expected to be made when Trump is officially inaugurated.

Trump is scheduled to be inaugurated as President of the United States on January 20, 2025. This proposed policy is expected to escalate global tensions, as it could further worsen the trade war between nations.

Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati also mentioned that Trump's victory in the US presidential election is expected to have a significant impact on the global economy, including in the ASEAN region. One of the policies expected to have an impact is the proposed increase in import tariffs.

According to Sri Mulyani, high import tariffs are seen as a form of protectionism by the US. While these policies have traditionally focused on imports from China, similar measures could also affect ASEAN countries.

“Until now, the focus has been on China due to their trade surplus with the US. However, as seen during Trump’s first term, the US Department of the Treasury also observed trade surpluses with all their trading partners,” said Sri Mulyani during a working meeting with Commission XI at the Senayan Parliament in Jakarta on Wednesday (November 13, 2024).
