A delegation from the Government of Indonesia, led by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, continued negotiations with the United States to reduce the 32% trade tariff imposed on Indonesia. This effort included an official meeting with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
According to Airlangga, Indonesia became one of the first countries to be received by the U.S. government to discuss the continuation of the tariff agreement, following the announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump on July 7, 2025.
"This reflects the strong commitment of both countries to maintain the stability of their trade relations," Airlangga said in a written statement on Thursday, July 10, 2025.
During the meeting, Airlangga expressed appreciation for the constructive nature of the negotiation process with the United States. The discussions covered a broad range of topics, including trade tariffs, non-tariff barriers, digital economy, economic security, as well as cooperation in commerce and investment.
Both Indonesia and the U.S. agreed to intensify the tariff negotiations over the next three weeks to ensure the best possible outcome for both parties.
“We’ve reached a mutual understanding with the U.S. regarding the progress of these talks. Moving forward, we aim to complete the negotiation based on principles of mutual benefit,” Airlangga explained.
Airlangga emphasized that Indonesia and the U.S. have maintained a strong bilateral relationship, which should be further strengthened. Both nations also see significant potential to expand cooperation in strategic sectors, particularly in critical minerals.
“We aim to strengthen Indonesia’s commercial ties with the U.S. Just last week, Indonesian companies in the agriculture and energy sectors signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with U.S. firms to purchase American flagship products and boost investment cooperation,” said Airlangga.
“The U.S. has shown strong interest in deepening partnerships in critical minerals. Indonesia possesses substantial reserves of nickel, copper, and cobalt, and we must capitalize on this potential through collaborative mineral processing initiatives,” he added.
Airlangga stated that Indonesia will continue the negotiations in good faith, ensuring that the resulting cooperation delivers concrete and balanced benefits for both nations.
Joining Airlangga in the meeting were key officials including Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs Susiwijono, Deputy for Economic Cooperation and Investment Edi Prio Pambudi, Deputy for Trade and Digital Economy Ali Murtopo, and Assistant Deputy for Bilateral Economic Cooperation Irwan Sinaga.
