DIGIVESTASI - Government Plans to Build 4.3 GW Nuclear Power Plants, Targeting Earlier Operation, Indonesia’s Presidential Special Envoy for Climate and Energy, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, announced that the government plans to construct nuclear power plants (NPPs) with a total capacity of 4.3 gigawatts (GW). This initiative aligns with the country’s target of adding 103 GW of electricity generation capacity over the next 15 years, with 75% of the additional power coming from renewable energy sources, including nuclear power.

"The government plans to establish several nuclear power centers with a total capacity of 4.3 GW, including floating small modular reactors (SMRs)," Hashim stated at the ESG Sustainability Forum 2025 on Friday (January 31, 2025).

He further explained that three large NPPs would be developed, each with a capacity of 1 GW. This project is part of the government’s efforts to tackle climate change challenges.

"There will be one, two, or three large NPPs, each with a capacity of 1 GW. This is all part of addressing climate change issues," he added.

The government is currently finalizing its nuclear power development plans. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has even accelerated the operational target for NPPs from 2032 to 2029.

Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Yuliot Tanjung, stated that this acceleration is in line with plans to increase power generation capacity to 443 GW, as outlined in the National Electricity General Plan (RUKN) 2025-2060.

"The 443 GW power generation target is set to support projected economic growth of 8% by 2029. Of this capacity, approximately 79% will come from renewable energy sources," Yuliot explained during a working meeting with Commission XII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) on Thursday (January 23, 2025).

He emphasized that nuclear power development is essential to achieving the 79% renewable energy mix target. However, no companies have expressed interest in investing in nuclear power projects so far.

"There are no prospective companies yet; the nuclear power development is still under government review," he concluded.
