The Ministry of Trade (Kemendag) has stated that it received 'documents' requesting social commerce permits from Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, also known as the Meta Group. However, these documents were returned by the Ministry.

Isy Karim, the Director General of Domestic Trade at Kemendag, then revealed the reasons for returning the documents. He explained that there are still several requirements that need to be fulfilled.

"It has been submitted, but there are still some things that need to be completed," said Isy, as quoted on Thursday (9/11/2023).

One of the requirements mentioned is the existence of an application integrated with consumer protection.

"In accordance with the provision that social commerce serves as a bridge for consumer protection, there must be a direct link," he said.

Since the documents were returned by Kemendag, Isy disclosed that Meta Group has not re-submitted its application for a social commerce permit.

According to business records on Tuesday (31/10/2023), Meta Group has applied for a permit as a social commerce platform. However, Meta Group has not yet obtained permission as a social commerce entity. Isy stated that these three platforms are currently registered only as web portals and social media.

With the submission of a permit as a social commerce platform, Meta Group is recognized only as a promotional medium and does not facilitate payment transactions on its platform.

"Now they are applying for social commerce permits, only for promotional purposes, without involving transactions. They have applied, but there are still some documents that need to be completed," he concluded.
