Trump Imposes Up to 25% Tariffs, Indonesia Could Be the Next Target

U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed tariffs of up to 25% on multiple countries as part of his new policy. This move has triggered a trade war between the U.S. and various nations, including Mexico and Canada, which previously enjoyed tariff-free trade with the U.S.

Indonesia's Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati revealed that Trump is now targeting countries with trade surpluses against the U.S., including Indonesia. In 2024, Indonesia recorded a trade surplus of $19.3 billion with the U.S., ranking 15th among countries with the largest surpluses.

Sri Mulyani also warned of potential risks, noting that Vietnam is likely to become the next major target for high tariffs.

"We can see that countries with large surpluses have already been affected. China was hit, Mexico was hit, and Vietnam is likely to be next," Sri Mulyani stated during a press conference on Thursday (March 13, 2025).

She further explained that if the U.S. imposes additional tariffs on Indonesia, it could significantly impact various sectors, from manufacturing supply chains to digital industries, potentially increasing operational costs.

"Supply chains will be disrupted, commodity prices will become more volatile, and market sentiment will continue to fluctuate, as we have seen over the past month. This situation is prompting many countries to rethink the global economic landscape, including decisions on investment relocation and supply chain reconfiguration," she added.
