Despite Indonesia having the lowest working hours in ASEAN, Gen Z is more prone to depression?

DIGIVESTASI - Generation Z is now more prone to despair in the face of workplace pressures, with higher rates of depression than other generations, despite working fewer hours. According to the Indonesian Health Survey (IHS) report from the Ministry of Health (MoH), the prevalence of depression in Indonesia reached 1.4% in 2023.

In terms of age groups, the highest prevalence of depression is experienced by those aged 15-24 years, or generation Z, at 2%.

Generation Z is prone to depression, especially when in a harsh work environment. Based on employment status, the highest rate of depression puts private sector employees in the fifth or sixth position with a prevalence rate of around 1%..

In fact, when it comes to working hours in Indonesia, the country ranks second with the shortest working hours in Southeast Asia. Based on data from the International Labor Organization (ILO), the average working hours in Indonesia reach 40 hours per week, including one of the shortest in the Southeast Asia region.

Based on Labor Law No. 13 of 2003, working hours in Indonesia are regulated as follows:

1. Normal working hours: A maximum of 7 hours per day and 40 hours per week for a 6-day work week, or 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week for a 5-day work week.

2. Overtime: Overtime working hours are allowed up to a maximum of 3 hours per day and 14 hours per week, subject to certain conditions and appropriate compensation.

This regulation strictly regulates working hours to ensure a balance between work and personal life.
