Acer has officially entered the wearable technology market with the launch of its new smart ring called Acer FreeSense. Executives from the Taiwanese tech giant explained the reasoning behind the creation of FreeSense and why they chose a ring form factor instead of opting for a smart band or smartwatch.
“At the beginning of this year, I stated that this would be the year of AI applications and edge devices. Think about the incredible power of AI—but how do we harness that power?” said Allen Jong, President of Acer Gadget, during the Computex 2025 event in Taipei.
Edge devices refer to computing tools like IoT sensors, gateways, and mobile devices. From this concept, Acer was inspired to develop and release FreeSense.
“This ring is an example and a starting point for edge devices powered by AI. That’s the reasoning, and I believe there will be more devices like this in the future, not only from Acer but across the whole industry,” Allen added.
He emphasized that wearables such as smart rings will stay connected to data and leverage AI to enhance everyday life. “This is our vision,” he continued. Why a ring and not a smartwatch, though?
“There are already too many watches out there. We needed to differentiate. There are only a few smart rings globally. Some people prefer watches, others prefer rings—so we are offering a new form factor to ensure everyone can experience AI,” Allen explained.
Currently, only a few tech companies have launched smart rings, and Acer appears to be capitalizing on that opportunity. At first glance, the Acer FreeSense looks like a regular ring, but it houses a range of integrated technologies.
In terms of design, FreeSense will be available in seven sizes—ranging from size 7 to 13—and will weigh between 2 and 3 grams. The ring has a thickness of 2.6 mm. The battery life is reported to last up to four days.
As for its capabilities, the combination of sensors and AI allows FreeSense to monitor heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), and blood oxygen levels. It can also track sleep quality. Essentially, it offers features similar to other wearables like smartwatches.
Currently, Acer FreeSense is not yet available in many countries, and there is no official information regarding its release in Indonesia. The retail price is set at approximately USD 199.
