DIGIVESTASI - Apple Proposes IDR 1.57 Trillion Investment to Enable iPhone 16 Sales in Indonesia, U.S. tech giant Apple is reportedly ramping up its investment plans in Indonesia to USD 100 million (approximately IDR 1.57 trillion), a tenfold increase from its initial plan of USD 10 million (approximately IDR 157 billion). This move is seen as an effort to meet the Indonesian government’s requirements for allowing the iPhone 16 to be marketed domestically.
Shift in Investment Focus to R&D
According to a *Bloomberg* report, the IDR 1.57 trillion investment is planned to be implemented over the next two years. Initially, the investment was limited to developing accessory and component manufacturing facilities in Bandung, West Java. However, the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) has requested that Apple redirect its focus to research and development (R&D) within Indonesia.
Internal sources revealed that Apple has submitted a revised proposal to Kemenperin, though the ministry has yet to make a final decision on its approval.
Delayed Meeting with Minister of Industry
The report also noted that Apple executives were invited to Jakarta for a meeting with Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita. However, upon their arrival, Agus was reportedly unavailable, leaving the meeting to be conducted with directorate general officials. Neither Apple nor Kemenperin has provided an official response regarding these developments.
iPhone 16 Sales Blockade Due to TKDN Requirements
The sales ban on the iPhone 16 in Indonesia stems from Apple's failure to meet the 40% Domestic Component Level (TKDN) requirement. The government records show that Apple has fulfilled IDR 1.5 trillion of its investment obligation through developer academy programs but still falls short by IDR 300 billion of the agreed IDR 1.7 trillion commitment.
Similarly, Google Pixel devices, produced by Alphabet Inc., face a comparable ban due to the lack of significant investments in Indonesia.
Apple's Sales Performance and Regulator Criticism
Minister Agus Gumiwang revealed that in 2023, Apple achieved more than IDR 30 trillion in sales of its HKT (handphone, handheld computer, and tablet) products in Indonesia. However, he criticized Apple for failing to fulfill its outstanding investment commitment of IDR 300 billion.
Analyst: Apple Unlikely to Abandon the Indonesian Market
Gadget analyst Herry SW expressed confidence that Apple would not risk losing the Indonesian market, which is regarded as a strategic region for the tech giant. He described the shortfall of IDR 240 billion—relatively minor for a company of Apple’s size—as insufficient reason to jeopardize market access.
"Indonesia is a critical market for Apple. The IDR 240 billion shortfall is minimal. It would be unwise for Apple not to address this, especially considering the risk of the iPhone 16 not being officially sold in Indonesia," Herry stated.
Apple now faces the decision to promptly fulfill its investment commitments to maintain its stronghold in the Indonesian market, which continues to grow as a key technological hub in Southeast Asia.
