The latest feature on the Threads app now allows users to avoid automatically sharing posts to Facebook and Instagram. When activated, users can disable this feature, preventing Threads from sharing posts to Instagram or Facebook without the user's permission.
As reported by Engadget, software engineer Alessandro Paluzzi discovered this privacy toggle in early November. Threads users can deactivate the cross-platform content sharing feature by visiting the profile page, selecting the menu in the top right corner, then navigating to Privacy and choosing "Suggesting posts on other apps."
Next, slide the toggle next to Instagram and Facebook to the Off position. However, it's important to note that this feature only prevents posts from being used in cross-promotion. Users will still be able to find posts from other Threads users on their Instagram and Facebook feeds.
Some Threads users have expressed discomfort with the app's ability to automatically share content, particularly because many use the app to connect with different community groups.
TechCrunch highlights several comments from users who view the ability to automatically share Threads posts on other platforms as peculiar and speculate that it may be designed to elicit comments by removing bold contextual statements.
In the previous October, Meta stated that they were responding to user complaints about the automatic sharing feature to more established platforms under their umbrella. Meta, as the owner of the Threads app, leverages Instagram to promote the platform, resulting in Threads becoming the fastest app to reach 150 million downloads.
Despite experiencing a growth slowdown thereafter, CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently revealed that Threads now has nearly 100 million users. The Facebook founder is optimistic about Threads' potential to reach one billion users in the future.
