DIGIVESTASI - China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed hope that the United States (US) will continue to allow TikTok to operate in the country, given the positive impact it has on the economy. Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning explained that TikTok has been operating in the US for years and is very popular among users there. TikTok is claimed to have made a positive contribution in creating jobs and boosting consumption in the US.
On Sunday, January 19, 2025, TikTok announced that its service could no longer be accessed in the US. However, on the same day, the company reported that it was restoring its services in the US after receiving assurances from US President Donald Trump. Previously, TikTok was no longer available on the App Store and Google Play Store.
Mao Ning hoped that the US would listen to reason and create a fair, open, and non-discriminatory business environment for companies from various countries. Mao emphasized that decisions regarding the operation and acquisition of businesses should be made independently by companies according to market principles, and if involving Chinese companies, they should comply with the laws of China.
She added that during its operations in the US, TikTok has complied with the country's laws and has not posed any national security threat. Mao also reassured that China pays great attention to privacy and data security issues, always protecting data in accordance with the applicable laws.
TikTok expressed gratitude to Donald Trump for the clarification and assurances given, ensuring that the platform would not face sanctions and could continue to operate in the US, serving more than 170 million American users and supporting over 7 million small businesses.
For information, TikTok was previously inaccessible after the US Supreme Court upheld a law that banned the app from operating unless its owner, ByteDance, sold a portion of its shares to parties outside of China, citing national security concerns. The law, passed by Congress and signed by President Biden in April 2024, gave ByteDance until January 19, 2025, to divest. The US Supreme Court approved the law, deeming it not to violate the First Amendment of the US Constitution.
However, one day before his inauguration on Monday, January 20, 2025, President Trump urged that the decision be postponed to allow for further negotiations. Trump also stated he would grant a 90-day extension for resolving the issue. The TikTok ban had previously sparked the "TikTok Refugee" trend, where users switched to the Chinese app Xiaohongshu (RedNote), which then became the most downloaded app in the US.
