Shocking! 30% of Imported Rice Consumed by Indonesians Comes from Thailand

DIGIVESTASI - Indonesia’s Rice Imports in 2024 Surge, Dominated by Thailand, Indonesia recorded rice imports totaling 4.52 million tons throughout 2024, an increase of 32 percent compared to 2023, when imports reached only 3.06 million tons. This data was presented by Acting Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, during the Regional Inflation Control Coordination Meeting on Monday (January 20, 2025).

 

"Rice imports throughout 2024 mainly originated from Thailand," said Amalia, also known as Winny. According to the BPS report, 30.19 percent of the total rice imports in 2024, or approximately 1.36 million tons, came from Thailand.

 

The total rice imports in 2024 represent the highest figure in seven years. As a comparison, rice imports in 2018 stood at 2.25 million tons, while in 2019 they were 444,510 tons. The figures have fluctuated since, with 359,290 tons in 2020, 407,740 tons in 2021, and 429,210 tons in 2022.

 

Types of Imported Rice

Most of the rice imported by Indonesia in 2024 fell under the HS 10063099 category, comprising semi-milled or wholly milled rice, whether polished or not, with a volume of 3.99 million tons. Additionally, there was rice in the HS 10064090 category, classified as broken rice (excluding those for animal feed), totaling 510,010 tons. Other categories accounted for 22,140 tons.

 

Countries of Origin for Rice Imports

Thailand was the main country of origin, contributing 1.36 million tons or 30.19 percent of total imports. Vietnam ranked second with a volume of 1.25 million tons (27.62 percent), followed by Myanmar in third place with 831,380 tons (18.40 percent). Other sources of imports included Pakistan (803,840 tons, 17.79 percent), India (246,590 tons, 5.46 percent), and various other countries (25,130 tons, 0.56 percent).

 

Decline in Domestic Rice Production

Domestic rice production from January to December 2024 was recorded at 30.41 million tons, a decrease of 2.24 percent compared to the previous year. However, forecasts suggest that rice production in January-February 2025 will be higher than during the same period in 2024.
