DIGIVESTASI - Software developers using Apple's App Store will soon be able to distribute apps to users in the European Union directly from their websites. The new rules are planned to take effect this spring, Apple announced on Tuesday (December 3, 2024).

Citing a Reuters report, the decision is part of changes required by new EU regulations that will force Apple to open up its ecosystem, which has been very closed.

The European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which came into force last week, will require Apple (AAPL.O) to open up alternative options to the App Store on the iPhone, allowing developers to sign up for paid in-app payment systems. now opting out of cancellation fees of up to 30%.

In a blog post, Apple said it is "providing additional flexibility for developers distributing apps in the European Union, including introducing new ways to distribute apps directly from developer sites." "Apple will give certified developers access to APIs (application programming interfaces) that make it easy to distribute apps from the web, and provide many features integrated into the system, backups, and more," the company said.

Other changes include allowing developers setting up alternative marketplace apps to directly offer a catalog containing only the marketplace developer's own apps. Apple's changes come amid continuous criticism from competitors. Violations of the DMA can subject companies to fines of up to 10% of their global turnover.
