DIGIVESTASI - Apple has committed to a $1 billion investment, equivalent to IDR 15.95 trillion, for the construction of an AirTag factory in Batam. The agreement was reached during a meeting between Apple representatives and Indonesia's Minister of Investment and Downstreaming, also Head of BKPM, Rosan Roeslani, in Jakarta on Tuesday (January 7, 2025).

Rosan emphasized that this investment represents the initial step in Apple’s broader expansion plan in Indonesia. “Alhamdulillah, we have just agreed and shook hands on this commitment,” he said. The AirTag factory is designed to meet 65% of the global demand for the tracking device.

The initial $1 billion investment will focus on building manufacturing facilities in Batam. Although the exact construction start date has not been confirmed, the government is targeting the factory to be completed and operational by early 2026. “The plan will proceed in stages. They’ve already surveyed the location, and if work begins now, it’s scheduled for completion by early 2026,” Rosan explained.

Creating 2,000 Jobs

The AirTag factory in Batam is expected to create up to 2,000 jobs. Rosan noted that the investment covers the entire development process until the factory is operational. This is part of the initial phase, with Apple planning to establish additional factories in the future.

“The important thing is the commitment is in place. We will continue to oversee the process to ensure the success of this investment,” Rosan added.

In addition to meeting with Rosan, Apple’s Vice President of Global Policy, Nick Amman, and his delegation also held discussions with Indonesia’s Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, to strategize the implementation of Apple’s investment in the country.

The discussions also addressed local content requirements (TKDN) for Apple products, including the iPhone 16, which has not yet fully met the standards. Regarding this, Rosan stated that further decisions would be coordinated with the Ministry of Industry.
