President Prabowo Subianto is planning to acquire 50 aircraft from the American aerospace company Boeing. The majority of these are Boeing 777 wide-body aircraft, typically used for long-haul international flights. But how much do they cost?
This acquisition is part of a broader trade agreement negotiated between Indonesia and the United States. As part of the deal, former U.S. President Donald Trump outlined four conditions for reducing tariffs on Indonesian imports to 19 percent, one of which includes the purchase of 50 Boeing-manufactured airplanes.
According to information from EMAirplane, a single Boeing 777 is priced starting at USD 330 million, or approximately IDR 5.37 trillion. However, commercial airlines rarely pay the full catalog price when ordering new aircraft from Boeing.
Bulk purchases, loyal customer status, and negotiation strategies typically allow airlines to receive substantial discounts from the listed prices.
The actual purchase cost for airlines can be tens of millions of dollars lower than the official retail price.
For example, in 2018, Emirates placed an order for 40 Boeing 777X jets, with a total value of USD 16 billion. While specific pricing details were not disclosed, considering the 2018 list price of USD 425 million per 777X aircraft, Emirates is estimated to have paid around USD 350 million per unit after discounts.
Used Boeing 777s are available at significantly lower prices but still represent a considerable investment. Aircraft that are 10 to 15 years old and in good condition may be sold for USD 70–90 million.
Older models from the 1990s might be sold for USD 30–50 million, depending on engine type and interior specifications.
In summary, brand-new Boeing 777s typically cost between USD 330 million and USD 425 million, but airlines often secure discounts of USD 50 million or more per aircraft—roughly IDR 815 billion.
President Prabowo emphasized that this aircraft purchase is essential to support the growth of Garuda Indonesia as the country’s national airline.
“We certainly need to grow Garuda. Garuda is a source of national pride. It is our national flag carrier. Garuda was born during our independence struggle. Therefore, it must stand as a symbol of Indonesia,” Prabowo told reporters at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, Jakarta, on Wednesday (July 16).
As part of the agreement, Indonesia has committed to purchasing USD 15 billion worth of energy from the U.S., USD 4.5 billion in agricultural goods, and 50 Boeing 777 aircraft for PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk.
Prabowo stressed that the condition to purchase 50 Boeing 777s is not burdensome because these aircraft are genuinely needed by the state-owned airline.
