Telkom Indonesia and Ericsson said digital sovereignty requires more than connectivity. At a Jakarta discussion, they pointed to networks, AI-ready data centers, local platforms, talent, security, market support and regulation as elements of an ecosystem that must be developed together.
Telkom President Director Nanang Hendarno said the company is building connectivity and data centers prepared for AI workloads. Telkom is also developing a national Internet of Things platform through Telkomsel and an AI Model Hub. Nanang said these efforts use local talent and could form a base for applications suited to industry and community needs.
Nanang said Indonesia has the technical potential to keep most data traffic within the country, but implementation depends on policy direction and regulators. He also called data security fundamental and said government and market support is needed because AI development has not yet become consistently profitable.
Ericsson Indonesia President Director Nora Wahby described local skills as a key pillar. She said Indonesia must decide which digital services and infrastructure should be managed domestically and which can rely on global providers. She pointed to the European Union’s regulatory approach and India’s data-center model as examples, while cautioning that the country need not build every technology from scratch.
Ericsson said it supports local talent and innovation, including through Garuda Spark Innovation Hub, which provides 5G radio access for testing use cases. Speakers emphasized collaboration among government, industry, technology providers and local businesses; the report does not name one model as a final national decision.
