A screenshot showing a post allegedly made by U.S. President Donald Trump criticizing Indonesia for supporting Iran circulated widely on social media.
The image, which appeared to be taken from Trump’s social media account, displayed a strongly worded message in which he questioned why Indonesia supports Iran, given that the majority of Muslims in the country adhere to Sunni Islam.
“Most Indonesians are Sunni, right? For years, you’ve constantly heard that Shia is ‘wrong’ and ‘dangerous’—all part of a massive campaign and repeated rhetoric. Everyone was shouting. And now? Suddenly they SUPPORT the Shia regime in Iran just because its enemies are Israel and America. It’s incredible how that happens! A complete reversal. No consistency, no principles—just politics,” read the statement in the screenshot.
“Yesterday you said one thing, today you do the COMPLETE OPPOSITE. Very convincing... NOT! Hypocrisy at a whole different level. SAD!!!” the post continued.
However, according to CNN Indonesia’s findings, Trump’s official accounts on platforms such as Truth Social, X, and Instagram did not publish such a statement.
The Indonesian government also confirmed that the post was a hoax. The Government Communication Agency, through its Instagram account @cekfakta.ri, stated that there was no official statement from Trump as claimed in the circulating content.
“Therefore, it can be concluded that the content is fabricated and has been edited,” @cekfakta.ri stated on Thursday (April 9).
They further emphasized that such hoax content is not only misleading but also has the potential to trigger social division and disrupt harmony in Indonesia.
The agency also highlighted that Indonesia is known as a country that upholds diversity and tolerance. Narratives that attempt to pit religious groups against one another do not reflect reality and may cause public unrest.
They urged the public to be more cautious in sharing unverified information.
“The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and critical to avoid falling into disinformation,” the agency stated.
On social media, the screenshot image circulated widely, appearing to show a post by Trump on Truth Social discussing Sunni-Shia issues and the stance of Indonesians.
The content claimed that the majority of Indonesians are Sunni and have long viewed Shia groups as wrong and dangerous.
“It’s all a big campaign and exaggerated rhetoric, everyone criticizing. And now? Suddenly they SUPPORT the Shia regime in Iran just because its enemies are Israel and America—,” the content read.
“It’s amazing how that happens! A total shift. No consistency, no principles—just politics,” the post concluded.
