The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) notes that as of November 2023, the total length of toll roads in operation across Indonesia has reached 2,816.7 kilometers.

Endra S. Atmawidjaja, the spokesperson for the Ministry of PUPR, states that the active toll road length is expected to continue increasing by around 200 kilometers by the end of this year, followed by an additional 400 kilometers in 2024.

"It is estimated to continue increasing until the end of this year and in 2024. There might still be around 600 kilometers to be completed this year, around 200 kilometers perhaps, and 400 kilometers next year," he said during a discussion at Hotel GranDhika, Jakarta, on Thursday (16/11/2023).

In other words, by the end of 2023, the total length of toll roads in operation in Indonesia will reach 3,000 kilometers, indicating a significant improvement in connectivity.

However, Endra states that despite achieving this toll road length, it still cannot compete with the toll road networks in countries like China, South Korea, and various others.

"Although we have worked hard, this achievement is not sufficient if Indonesia aims to elevate its status to a developed country and move away from the middle-income category," he said.

As a result, the government and stakeholders are expected to continue the construction of toll roads, especially in remote areas.

"So, there is still a lot of homework to be done. Although the current achievements are good, they are still not enough. We have projects in Sumatra, and we also have projects in Kalimantan. In the southern part of Java and Sulawesi, there are still projects that need to be developed in the future," he added.
