Indonesia is preparing to export up to 1 million tons of rice this year. State-owned logistics agency Perum Bulog has confirmed that the rice designated for export meets premium quality standards.
Perum Bulog President Director Ahmad Rizal Ramdhani stated that the company has already established communication with trade attachés from ASEAN countries. However, since discussions have only taken place once, he noted that no concrete outcomes have been reached so far.
“As of now, we have not received feedback from the embassies, particularly the trade attachés. Since it was only the first meeting, they likely still need to present the offer to their respective governments,” Rizal told reporters at his office in South Jakarta on Sunday (11/1/2026).
Rizal added that confirmation regarding which countries will receive Indonesian rice is expected within the next few weeks or months, as responses from several potential destinations are anticipated in that timeframe.
Following this plan, Bulog has allocated 1 million tons of premium-grade rice for export, in line with instructions from the Minister of Agriculture in his capacity as Head of the National Food Agency.
Despite the planned export volume, Rizal emphasized that domestic rice supplies remain secure, particularly ahead of major religious holidays. Current government rice reserves stand at 3.25 million tons. Even after deducting the export quota, the remaining stock is considered more than sufficient to meet domestic demand.
“For Chinese New Year, then Ramadan and Eid, we can assure the public that supplies are safe. Even after allocating 1 million tons for export, there will still be around 2.25 million tons remaining. It’s secure,” Rizal concluded.
