DIGIVESTASI - There are rumors that two major ride-hailing services in Southeast Asia, Grab and Gojek (GoTo), will merge and integrate. This step is taken as a strategy to eliminate the losses experienced by both companies due to business competition.

Grab Indonesia also spoke up in response to the confusing news. "We do not comment on any rumors or speculations that are spread," said Mayan Schreiber, chief communications officer of Grab Indonesia.

Meanwhile, GoTo has not yet reacted to the news of the merger of these two technology companies. As reported by Bloomberg, Monday (12/2), the two ride-hailing and food delivery giants are rumored to be merging and there are several scenarios to reach an agreement. One option is for Singapore-based Grab to acquire GoTo in cash, stock, or both, an unnamed source said.

Major shareholders of both companies are also in favor of the agreement and are pushing for the continuation of negotiations, the source said. In addition, if the merger goes through, options are being considered to separate key markets, with Grab managing Singapore and a few other market locations, and GoTo retaining control of Indonesia.

Reference: The topic of a merger of two major ride-hailing companies in Southeast Asia seems to have surfaced in 2020. In December 2020, DealStreetAsia reported that the merger would cover all Grab and Gojek services, including transportation, food delivery, and digital payments.
