The Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) has now been officially introduced in Japan, coinciding with the 80th Anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence on August 17, 2025.

Before expanding its services to Japan, QRIS had already been connected to payment systems in several other countries. So, where is QRIS currently available? Here are the countries where the service can be used, compiled from various sources:

1. Thailand
Thailand was the first country to collaborate in expanding cross-border QRIS transactions. The partnership with the Bank of Thailand was launched on August 17, 2022. As of August 2025, nearly 1 million transactions have been recorded, amounting to Rp437.54 billion in value.

2. Malaysia
Malaysia became the second country to integrate with QRIS. In cooperation with Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), the collaboration recorded 4.31 million transactions with a total value of around Rp1.15 trillion up to 2025.

3. Singapore
The third country to adopt QRIS was Singapore, through collaboration with the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). So far, there have been 238,216 transactions conducted, valued at approximately Rp77.06 billion.

4. Japan
On August 17, 2025, Bank Indonesia officially launched QRIS in Japan. This expansion marks QRIS’s first step outside the ASEAN region, following its earlier rollouts in Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore.

5. China
Bank Indonesia and the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) are currently conducting trials to connect QRIS Indonesia with China’s payment systems. This integration is expected to proceed once all trial stages and technical preparations are successfully completed. The pilot project involves the Indonesian Payment System Association (ASPI), UnionPay International (UPI), and several payment service providers.

Previously, Bank Indonesia reported that digital payment transactions via QRIS continued to grow strongly, posting a year-on-year increase of 148.5% in the second quarter of 2025.

However, this growth was slightly slower compared to the 151.7% growth rate in May 2025.

Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia, Filianingsih Hendarta, stated that transaction volume reached 6.1 billion, equivalent to 93% of the 6.5 billion target. Meanwhile, QRIS users rose to 57 million, nearing the 58 million target.

“The nominal value also surged significantly to Rp317 trillion, marking a 121% year-on-year growth. The number of merchants has also expanded sharply, reaching 39.3 million by the second quarter, which is 83.5% of the 40 million target,” Filianingsih said at a press conference on Wednesday (July 16, 2025).

In terms of transaction type, inbound usage — foreign visitors from Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand using QRIS in Indonesia — showed an upward trend. In contrast, outbound usage — Indonesians using QRIS in those three countries — experienced a slowdown.
