The monthly inflation rate for September 2023 stood at 0.19%, with rice prices contributing significantly with a 0.18% increase. The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) considers this change noteworthy, especially given the 0.02% deflation in August 2023.
In response to this, the Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) has issued a warning to the government. They emphasize the need to ensure the availability and stability of food prices as part of their efforts to control inflation. According to Apindo's Chairman, Shinta Widjaja Kamdani, they hope that the government can maintain domestic food supply and prices to meet the public's needs.
Shinta points out that the Food Security Task Force needs to remain vigilant until early 2024 due to the elevated risk of food inflation. Hence, more concerted efforts are required to bolster food productivity.
Another critical factor is the accuracy of food balance data, as it can significantly impact import decisions. Hasty import choices can disrupt the food balance and the ongoing import relaxation strategy, particularly when foreign food prices are rising.
Shinta also believes that the government should establish a clearer and more systematic mechanism, particularly to address inflation spikes caused by El Nino. It's worth noting that Indonesia's food inflation in August 2023 was the lowest among G20 member countries, despite August being a period significantly affected by El Nino."
