The MotoGP Mandalika 2023, also known as the Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia (Indonesian GP) 2023, will take place from October 13 to 15, 2023, at the Mandalika International Circuit in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). This international racing event is expected to have a significant economic impact.
Deputy Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN), Kartika Wirjoatmodjo, stated that the development of the Mandalika region has been ongoing for the past few years and has started to gain international recognition.
With the return of MotoGP to Mandalika this year, it is believed to attract more tourists, both domestic and international, especially MotoGP enthusiasts. As a result, this international racing event is expected to promote sports tourism development and enhance Indonesia's global image, while also providing benefits for the entire NTB community.
"We hope that this event will become a catalyst for building the best tourism destination in Mandalika based on sports tourism and, of course, provide benefits to the entire NTB community," he said during a press conference at the Sarinah Building in Jakarta on Tuesday (3/10/2023).
Maya Watono, Director of Marketing and Consumer Experience at InJourney, added that the circulation of money during the 2023 MotoGP event in Mandalika is expected to increase compared to the previous year.
She estimates that the financial flow during the 2023 MotoGP event will exceed Rp 4.5 trillion. Thus, it will have an economic impact on Indonesia, especially for the people of Lombok and its surroundings.
"Last year, the financial flow was about Rp 4.5 trillion, and we aim to focus more on the economic impact in the Lombok area and its surroundings; we want it to be higher than last year," Maya said.
She explained that the financial flow during the Mandalika MotoGP, which lasts for three days, includes various aspects such as flight bookings, accommodations, workforce absorption, and support for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) or other businesses.
In this MotoGP event, they will also consider broader economic impact parameters, including the length of tourists' stay in Mandalika and the average amount of money they spend while in the area.
"We will consider several parameters, such as the duration of stay in Mandalika and average spending. We want their average spending to be high, so we are not only considering the quantity of tourists but also their quality, whether their spending is high or not, which we will also measure," she explained.
