Nokia has filed a lawsuit against Amazon and HP for allegedly using its video technology without permission. Arvin Patel, Chief Licensing Officer of Nokia, revealed that this lawsuit has been filed in courts in the United States, Germany, India, the United Kingdom, and the European Patent Office.

Patel stated that Amazon Prime Video and Amazon's streaming services have infringed on Nokia's patented video technology, which includes video compression systems, content display, content recommendations, and its hardware components.

Patel emphasized that resorting to legal action is the last resort for Nokia, as most of their licensing agreements can be reached amicably. Since 2017, Nokia has approved and extended over 250 licenses, including licenses with Apple and Samsung, and has only initiated litigation six times.

He also mentioned that they have been in discussions with Amazon and HP for several years, but these efforts have not yielded the desired results. Therefore, Nokia has decided to sue both American technology companies.

Patel underlined that it is clear that Amazon and HP have significantly benefited from Nokia's multimedia inventions. Nokia has developed multimedia assets for more than 30 years, which encompass key technologies related to video processing systems, coding, storage, display, and user interfaces.

The lawsuit filed by Nokia seeks compensation for the use of these inventions. The royalties obtained will be utilized for investment and development of multimedia technology in the future, he added.

Despite filing a lawsuit against Amazon and HP, Nokia will continue to prioritize amicably reached agreements and remain open to constructive negotiations with goodwill.
