TikTok's strategy to compete with YouTube, inviting content creators to make landscape videos

DIGIVESTASI - Short video sharing app TikTok is looking to compete with YouTube. Now, TikTok is urging creators to be more diligent in uploading long-form videos in landscape or horizontal mode like YouTube videos to get higher views.

This was reported by creators @candicedchap and @kenlyealtumbiz. In the shared screenshot, TikTok encourages creators to upload videos longer than one minute in landscape format. Users can then have the option to "Increase Views/Improve Views" or increase views within 3 days of download.

According to TikTok, view growth may vary depending on many factors, such as video quality and the number of subscribers.

TikTok clarified that only content creators who have been using TikTok for more than 3 months can benefit from this increased video viewing incentive in landscape mode. Landscape videos must meet requirements such as being longer than one minute if possible, no lip syncing or random videos, following community guidelines, original videos, non-advertised videos, videos from politicians/parties.

Finally, creators must add the hashtag #longervideos when uploading. Unfortunately, TikTok did not reveal in detail whether all TikTok creators will be able to take advantage of the increased viewership program for landscape videos or whether the program will be limited to creators in certain countries.

TikTok started adopting horizontal videos since early January 2023. This time TikTok officially launched a new feature in the form of "full screen mode", which is full screen mode with horizontal orientation, not vertical as usual. This feature comes with a "full screen" button on the screen when watching videos on the TikTok For You (FYP) page, as shown above. After tapping the full screen button, the video will automatically play in full screen mode with landscape or landscape orientation.

While interacting with the screen, videos in full screen mode still display TikTok's signature interface such as the account profile photo, number of likes, number of favorites, and number of shares on the right side of the screen. To complete the user experience, TikTok also offers several options to speed up video clips, ranging from 0.75x, 1x, 1.25x, 1.5x, and 2x. There are also pause and play buttons and a progress bar to make it easier for users to watch the desired part of the video.
