Jack Dorsey Officially Launches “Bitchat”: A Bitcoin Messenger App Without Censorship or Internet

Jack Dorsey, the founder of Twitter (now X) and CEO of Block, has announced the beta launch of Bitchat, an instant messaging application that enables Bitcoin transfers and encrypted messaging without the Internet, central servers, or third-party surveillance. This initiative underscores Dorsey’s commitment to decentralization and digital freedom.

Bitchat leverages a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh network to connect devices within a radius of up to 300 meters using a multi-hop method. This allows the app to function without Internet access, SIM cards, or user accounts.

Maximum Security & Privacy

Every message is protected with end-to-end encryption based on Curve25519 and AES-GCM, with no metadata leaving the user’s device. User identities remain anonymous because each session utilizes temporary IDs.

Bitcoin Transfers Without Network Connection

Bitchat supports sending pre-signed Bitcoin transactions from external wallets such as Bitkey. These transactions can be transmitted offline between devices, offering a unique solution for communities in areas with limited Internet access.

Why Is This Important?

Resistant to Censorship & Internet Disruptions

Bitchat is designed to remain functional during Internet shutdowns, protests, or in regions with heavy censorship. Its store-and-forward mechanism ensures that messages are delivered even when direct connections are unavailable.

Part of Dorsey’s Decentralization Vision

After introducing Web5 and the Bitkey wallet, Dorsey is expanding his mission through Bitchat: no Internet, no user data, no central servers, and no metadata.

Impact on Humanity & Technology

Beyond technological innovation, Bitchat provides an emergency communication tool relevant during crises, protests, or natural disasters.

Next Steps & Global Impact

Bitchat is currently in a limited beta phase via Apple TestFlight (capacity full at 10,000 users). The next phase will include support for Wi-Fi Direct to extend its range. If successful, Bitchat could become a global censorship-resistant communication platform, similar to FireChat’s role during the Hong Kong protests.

Bitchat combines offline BTC technology, advanced encryption, and the principles of decentralization, creating a censorship-resistant communication tool for the digital era. Will this remain an experiment or spark a global communication revolution? The answer will depend on user adoption and community support.
