The Indonesian government is taking a more direct role in talks to procure gasoline and other fuels, crude oil, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Bahlil Lahadalia said the change follows the issuance of Presidential Regulation No. 107.

Bahlil said the new mechanism puts the government at the front of negotiations with supplier countries. He described its aims as shortening lengthy procurement procedures, opening the way for long-term contracts, and providing a channel for bilateral communication. For example, if Indonesia buys LPG from the United States, the government could communicate directly with the U.S. government.

## Implementation remains in transition

Bahlil said the new system is not yet fully in place, as the government is still refining it. He made the remarks when asked about imports of fuel, crude oil and LPG through the Lemigas Public Service Agency. He characterized the current phase as a transition toward a mechanism intended to work better.

The change would give the state a more direct part in cross-border energy procurement.
