DIGIVESTASI - The KPU ensures that all 2024 election data, including General Information System (Silecap) data, will be stored on a national server. All Silecap data will be processed and stored in the Indonesian data center in accordance with applicable laws and regulations, said KPU RI Commissioner Betty Epsilon Idrus, in front of the KPU, Jakarta, Monday, February 19, 2021. She conveyed this in a press conference at her office.
Betty said her party uses CDN (Content Delivery Network) to fulfill its need for a cloud server with high scalability and a strong security system. "To cope with this high traffic, the KPU has implemented a CDN (Content Delivery Network) which functions as a switch that is distributed globally throughout the world," she said.
Sirekap has also passed the evaluation process by an accredited body and is a source of public data. Betty said Sirekap is a large system with high computational complexity. "With the implementation of CDN, the public can access the Sirekap publishing portal and be redirected to CDN so as to improve website performance on the network concerned," she said.
A CDN is a group of servers around the world. When a website uses a CDN, its content (HTML, videos, images) is not only stored on the server where the website data is stored. A cached copy of the content is available to a group of servers.
The aim of this system is to share the bandwidth load in such a way that it does not interfere with the origin server where the data is stored. When a user visits a website, the site is served by a nearby server, thus reducing access time. Betty explained that the system uses a random IP for users to access KPU results. This mechanism is used so that 1.6 million KPPS employees access Sirekap as well as the general public.
Therefore, portal access needs to be distributed around the world to speed up access, he said. The use of CDN also helps the KPU survive cyber attacks. Betty revealed that there was a cyber disruption on the Sirekap site. However, she said, the KPU and the Cyber Group team tried to stop the chaos.
"Until February 14, 2024, Sirekap system failures are increasingly frequent, one of which is DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) failure," she concluded. Because the way a CDN works is to redistribute traffic as needed, it helps websites survive DDoS attacks.
If your website is attacked, the CDN ensures that the original server is not affected, so your website will never be "down". If the incoming traffic to your website far exceeds its capacity, it will be redirected to another server.
