Indonesia urged G20 members to strengthen cooperation on food, energy and supply-chain resilience amid geopolitical tensions. Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir delivered the message at the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in Atlanta, United States, on October 30–31, 2026.
Indonesia framed national, regional and global resilience as closely connected. It also called for a multilateral system that is more trusted, representative and responsive to emerging challenges.
Arrmanatha highlighted how conflicts affecting the Strait of Hormuz, the Black Sea and the Red Sea can disrupt trade routes and supplies of energy, fertilizer and food. Indonesia advocated de-escalation and dialogue, while saying food supplies should not be used as leverage in conflicts. It also referred to the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and its concept of Responsible Freedom of Navigation, pairing freedom of passage with responsibility and respect for sovereignty.
On energy, the minister described energy resilience as part of national security. Indonesia highlighted efforts toward greater self-reliance, including B50 and a plan for 100 gigawatts of solar power capacity. The country argued that crises should accelerate the energy transition, supported by wider access to clean-energy technology and affordable financing for developing economies.
For global supply chains, Indonesia called for stronger multilateral trade, better crisis preparedness, affordable long-term finance and technology partnerships. Its proposal for more production hubs, particularly in developing countries, was intended to help those economies become technology creators and developers as well as users.
The Atlanta meeting formed part of the 2026 US G20 presidency. It was attended by representatives of 18 G20 members, the European Union, the African Union and host-invited Poland; South Africa was absent. The United States issued a Chair’s Statement summarizing the discussions. The presidency continues with the G20 summit in Miami on December 14–15, before the United Kingdom takes over in 2027.
