DIGIVESTASI - Toyota is once again involved in certification irregularities, this time concerning the Toyota Yaris Cross model. Japan's Ministry of Transportation will conduct a raid on Toyota's headquarters following the discovery of improper certification. Similar irregularities were also found at Honda Motor Co., Mazda Motor Corp., Suzuki Motor Corp., and Yamaha Motor Co., according to Kyodo News.

The Ministry of Transportation has ordered Toyota, Mazda, and Yamaha to temporarily halt production of six vehicle models, including the Toyota Yaris Cross. The ministry revealed that improper certification was found in three current models and four previous models at Toyota.

This irregularity was uncovered after the ministry instructed 85 automakers and parts suppliers to investigate the validity of their certifications, following a series of quality scandals within the Toyota group companies.

Toyota stated that the certification irregularities identified by the Ministry of Transportation involved inadequate data in pedestrian and passenger protection testing for three models (Corolla Fielder/Axio and Yaris Cross) and errors in crash testing and other testing methods for four discontinued models (Crown, Isis, Sienta, and RX).

Toyota admitted to investigating the certification applications and using testing methods different from government standards, which was reported to the ministry on May 31. Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda apologized to consumers, automotive enthusiasts, and all stakeholders for this issue during a press conference on Monday (3/6/2024).

Toyota emphasized that after internal verification, there were no issues that violated laws and regulations. Nonetheless, they have temporarily halted the shipment and sale of three currently produced models in Japan (Corolla Fielder, Corolla Axio, and Yaris Cross) starting today. Toyota is committed to providing detailed explanations to authorities and expediting appropriate actions, including conducting tests in the presence of witnesses.

For consumers in Indonesia, Toyota Astra Motor assured that the Yaris Cross sold in Indonesia is not affected by the certification issues in Japan. Anton Jimmi Suwandy, Marketing Director of PT Toyota Astra Motor, confirmed that the model and production location of the Yaris Cross in Indonesia differ from those in Japan, so Indonesian consumers need not worry.
