DIGIVESTASI - PT PLN Nusantara Power is stepping up its efforts to reduce emissions through carbon trading this year, with a target of doubling compared to 2023. Director of Management and Human Resources Management of PLN Nusantara Power, Karyawan Aji explained, PLN NP is targeting 2 million tons of CO2 emissions traded this year. He said, there are at least 13 power plants involved in carbon trading this year.

"Last year we produced almost 1 million tons of CO2, this year maybe 2 million tons of CO2. There are 13 PLTUs (steam power plants)," said one of Mr. Aji's employees in Jakarta, Tuesday (April 23, 2024). Mr. Aji said his company is pushing the energy transition in earnest, as carbon trading will further accelerate net-zero efforts.

"This means that companies that build renewable power plants can create carbon credits, and companies that reduce them can create emission reduction credits, which means they can buy and sell emissions and incentivize the addition of other renewable energy that can be reduced economically, as ``the burden on the company that builds it will be very heavy.'' ``On the other hand, the burden on companies that operate CO2 will increase,'' Mr. Aji explained.

Last year, PLN NP was one of the very active parties approaching the opening of carbon trading.  The Indonesia Carbon Exchange (IDXCarbon) was launched in September 2023. In the early years of its market launch, PLN Nusantara Power began trading nearly 1 million tons of CO2 equivalent, making it the largest trader in the carbon exchange in Indonesia.

IDXCarbon is also connected to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry's (MoEF) National Registration System for Climate Change Management (SRN-PPI), which facilitates the management and transfer of carbon units and avoids double counting.

In addition to being listed on the exchange, PLN Nusantara Power covers three of the four aspects of carbon trading: direct emissions trading, direct emissions offsetting, and offset trading through exchanges that operate direct carbon trading.
