DIGIVESTASI - Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto represented Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and flew to Jordan on Sunday night (9/6/2024) to voice Indonesia's support for a ceasefire in Gaza, Palestine, at a high-level conference (KTT) in Amman, Jordan, which will take place on Tuesday (11/6/2024). Brigadier General TNI Edwin Adrian Sumantha, Head of the Public Relations Bureau of the Ministry of Defense Secretariat General, explained on Monday (10/6/2024) that this summit was initiated by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sissi, Jordan's King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
"The purpose of this conference is for heads of state to identify ways to strengthen the international community's response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza," said Edwin. The summit, themed “Call for Action: Urgent Humanitarian Response for Gaza,” is scheduled to take place for one day on Tuesday (11/6). Prabowo is scheduled to arrive in Amman, Jordan, on Monday (10/6/2024).
Edwin conveyed that the presence of the Indonesian government representative at this conference is expected to make a tangible contribution to the joint efforts to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. In addition to attending the summit, Prabowo is also scheduled to meet his old friend, the King of Jordan. On a separate occasion, Prabowo expressed plans to use this summit to offer assistance that Indonesia can prepare, including peacekeeping forces, field hospitals, healthcare workers, and victim evacuation.
"I will coordinate with the UN Secretary-General and the leaders of the regional countries so that Indonesia can implement our aid offer," Prabowo said when met at his residence in Jakarta, Friday (7/6). Prabowo emphasized that Indonesia remains firm in its stance that the resolution of the conflict in Gaza must be through a ceasefire and negotiation. "Indonesia also firmly supports the independence of the Palestinian people, supports the two-state solution, and supports all immediate ceasefire efforts," said Prabowo.
At the summit in Jordan, several countries including Australia are also sending representatives to discuss ceasefire strategies in Gaza. Australia is sending Early Childhood Education Minister Anne Aly to attend the meeting. Pope Francis from the Vatican also expressed his support for the summit in Jordan. He thanked the initiatives of the Egyptian President, the King of Jordan, and the UN Secretary-General, and called the summit an 'important initiative'.
