The government through the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kemenkominfo) announced that the draft Government Regulation on Publisher Rights in Indonesia has reached its final stage.
"The document regarding Publisher Rights is finalized. Yesterday, we received some input from various platforms. We remain open and welcome input from platforms," said the Director General of Public Information and Communication of Kemenkominfo, Usman Kansong, in Jakarta on Friday (24/11).
"Even so, not all inputs from platforms were included. Overall, the content of the document remains relatively unchanged."
Usman mentioned that the input from digital platforms was related to the selection of words used in the regulation.
They wish for the chosen words to be more refined. Nevertheless, according to him, this is not an issue as it does not alter the meaning contained in the document.
He explained that after the regulation is signed by President Joko Widodo, media will have the "power" to demand platforms using their content to share revenues.
Platforms can no longer freely take news from the media.
"Platforms that want to use news must establish cooperation, they can't just take it. This collaboration is done on an equal footing, where the media can receive a fee from the platform," emphasized Usman.
Furthermore, he added that although some platforms may disagree with this regulation, the decision is seen as a step forward and will not wait for their approval.
"What is essential for us is meaningful participation. We have listened to and considered their input, and provided explanations. A rule certainly cannot satisfy all parties. Therefore, we don't need to wait for their approval. We will continue to move forward," he said.
Usman hopes that the "Publisher Rights" regulation can be implemented by the end of this year and become a special gift for the press community ahead of Press Day in February next year.
