Shocking! Indonesia’s Neighbor Buys 11 Stealth Warships from Japan – Here’s

The Australian government has agreed to purchase 11 advanced frigates from Japan in a deal valued at US$6 billion, or approximately IDR 98.5 trillion. This agreement marks the most significant collaboration in defense industry history between Japan and Australia.

Australia’s Minister for Defence, Richard Marles, announced that the warships are Mogami-class frigates, manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The Japanese company successfully won the competitive bidding process, defeating Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems.

“This is clearly the largest defense industry deal ever made between Japan and Australia,” said Marles during a press conference on Tuesday (August 5, 2025), as reported by AFP.

Australia is currently undergoing a comprehensive military restructuring effort that began in 2023. This overhaul aims to enhance long-range strike capabilities in response to regional security developments, particularly regarding China’s growing military presence in the Indo-Pacific.

The Mogami-class frigates being acquired are a new generation of warships, designed with stealth features and advanced weapon systems.

“The Mogami-class is the best choice for Australia. These frigates are stealthy and feature 32 vertical launch cells capable of firing long-range missiles,” Marles emphasized.

Australia’s Minister for Defence Industry, Pat Conroy, added that the frigates would also be equipped with Tomahawk long-range cruise missiles—technology previously exclusive to Australia’s closest allies.

“The acquisition of these stealth frigates will make our navy larger and far more lethal,” Conroy stated.

These new ships are set to replace Australia’s aging fleet of Anzac-class frigates. The first vessel from this procurement is expected to enter service in 2030.

It is also worth noting that back in 2021, Australia announced plans to acquire nuclear-powered submarines designed by the United States. This plan effectively canceled a long-standing submarine development partnership with France that focused on conventional submarines.
