DIGIVESTASI - Uya Kuya’s Action of Creating Content at Los Angeles Fire Site Draws DPR Ethics Council’s Attention, The actions of Surya Utama, also known as Uya Kuya, a member of the Indonesian Parliament from the National Mandate Party (PAN), who recorded a video in the area affected by the fire in Los Angeles, USA, have drawn public attention. After being reprimanded by a fire victim, Uya’s actions are now under scrutiny by the Honorary Council of the Indonesian House of Representatives (MKD).
A circulating video shows the moment when Uya was reprimanded by a man who claimed to be the owner of the house that was burned in Altadena, Los Angeles, California. The man criticized Uya for his actions, which he deemed inappropriate and lacking empathy for the situation of the victims.
MKD to Request Clarification from Uya Kuya
The Chairman of the MKD, Nazaruddin Dek Gam, confirmed that the council would request clarification directly from Uya Kuya regarding the incident. However, the schedule for the clarification has not been set and will be decided once the parliamentary session resumes on Tuesday (January 21, 2025).
"We in the MKD will certainly request clarification from Mr. Uya Kuya," said Dek Gam at the Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta on Monday (January 20, 2025). Dek Gam expressed disappointment in Uya’s decision to record a video during a disaster and hoped that this would serve as a lesson for other parliament members to be more careful in public spaces.
“A disaster is a moment of mourning, so we must be sensitive to the situation. Don't exploit the situation for content,” he emphasized.
PAN’s Defense
The Vice Chairman of PAN, Viva Yoga Mauladi, defended Uya Kuya, affirming that Uya did not violate any rules while recording the video. According to Viva, Uya was in a public area and did not enter the house’s yard without permission.
"Mr. Uya Kuya had coordinated with local authorities before taking pictures. So, legally, his actions did not break any rules," explained Viva on Monday (January 20, 2025). Viva believes that the content of the video recorded at the fire site could have educational value if done in compliance with regulations.
Uya Kuya’s Apology
In response to the criticism and controversy, Uya Kuya apologized to those who felt offended. He stated that he personally apologized to the man who reprimanded him at the fire site. Furthermore, Uya and his team immediately stopped recording and deleted the video they had taken.
"We have apologized in person at the site and stopped filming. Even Cinta (Uya Kuya’s child) has tried to contact the homeowner to apologize via social media," said Uya.
Uya explained that their initial intention of recording at the site was to provide information to the public, including Indonesian journalists who needed the latest updates on the fire. According to Uya, local authorities such as the police and FBI had granted permission as long as they did not cross the designated boundaries of the area.
"Our goal was to provide accurate information, considering the numerous hoax photos and videos about the fire," he concluded.
Uya hopes that this incident will serve as a lesson for all parties to better understand the sensitivity of situations when involving the public in content or similar activities.
