DIGIVESTASI - Chinese President Xi Jinping addressed the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting on Thursday (7/4/2024), delivering an important message to the world's nations. Xi emphasized the importance of rejecting foreign interference in the internal affairs of countries.
"We must unite against external interference, support each other, and pay attention to our common interests," Xi said at the SCO summit in the capital of Kazakhstan, Astana.
Xi stressed the importance of controlling the future and destiny of countries and maintaining regional peace and development independently. "The world is now at a crossroads," he asserted.
Xi also advocated for each country's right to safeguard their own development, promote technological innovation, maintain the stability of industrial and supply chains, and encourage regional economic strengths to achieve common development goals.
Xi's statements come amid rising tensions between China and the West. Recently, China has urged the world's nations to reject the "decoupling" efforts by the West, including the relocation of factories out of China. This statement was echoed by Premier Li Qiang, who also called for cooperation and opposed the formation of separate blocs.
Li Qiang emphasized the importance of supply chain stability and the liberalization of trade and investment, considering China's rapid industrial development due to its comparative advantages.
Concerns over the decoupling between China and the West have grown in recent years, particularly in trade and technology issues. For example, last month, the US raised import tariffs worth US$18 billion on China, targeting strategic sectors such as electric vehicles, batteries, steel, and critical minerals. Beijing warned that this move would significantly affect the relationship between the two countries.
China also faces strict scrutiny from the European Union (EU), which is preparing to impose tariffs of up to 38% on Chinese electric vehicles starting July 4 due to concerns over unfair competition from significant Chinese government subsidies. These tariffs will be provisional until November before being fully implemented.
The SCO itself is a meeting that covers a vast area from Moscow to Beijing and includes Kazakhstan, India, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, and Belarus.
