Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, revealed potential cooperation opportunities with Russia in the energy sector. These opportunities include refinery development, strengthening oil trade, and expanding the use of energy technologies. He conveyed this during a bilateral meeting between President Prabowo and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin Palace in Moscow on Monday (April 13, 2026).
Bahlil explained that the meeting between the two leaders aimed to discuss energy cooperation in a concrete manner with a focus on national interests, particularly in securing energy supply and encouraging investment in the sector. He described the visit as a crucial moment to ensure the stability of Indonesia’s energy supply while enhancing national energy resilience.
He further noted that ongoing volatility in the global energy market has affected supply stability in many countries, including Indonesia. As a result, the government continues to pursue strategic measures, including exploring partnerships with Russia as a major global energy producer.
Bahlil reaffirmed his commitment to advancing energy diplomacy to maintain domestic energy supply stability. According to him, the government will ensure that the cooperation opportunities discussed are implemented promptly.
In the long term, Indonesia is also opening avenues for collaboration in clean energy as part of its energy diversification efforts. Bahlil expressed hope that such cooperation would strengthen Indonesia’s energy security and support economic stability for both countries amid global uncertainties.
President Prabowo emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening strategic ties with Russia in the energy sector as part of efforts to maintain national economic stability, especially in the face of global geopolitical challenges. He highlighted the importance of consultations to address future conditions and deepen cooperation, particularly in the economic and energy fields, while expressing appreciation for the prompt reception by Russia.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that cooperation between Russia and Indonesia consistently prioritizes strategic sectors, especially energy. He also noted that both countries maintain close cooperation and active engagement in various international forums. Indonesia’s membership in BRICS, he added, opens new opportunities to further expand bilateral cooperation.
