DIGIVESTASI - The Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs Reveals Indonesia's Export Forecast Could Reach US$ 70 Billion by 2030 Thanks to Nickel Downstreaming. The Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs (Kemenko Marves) has revealed that Indonesia's export value is projected to reach US$ 70 billion, equivalent to Rp 1,140 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp 16,295 per US$) by 2030. This prediction is related to the nickel downstreaming project, which is a primary focus of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).
The Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, stated that the trend of increasing the value of Indonesia's nickel exports will continue annually. This is especially true with further processing, which produces cathode precursors that significantly contribute to the increase in export value.
"In 2023, the value of Indonesia's nickel exports reached US$ 40 billion," said Luhut during the 52nd-anniversary celebration of the Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs Association (Hipmi) at the Fairmont Hotel, Jakarta.
Luhut added that Indonesia will continue to gain added value from the downstreaming process, especially in nickel commodities. As evidence, the export of raw nickel in the form of ore only reached US$ 4 billion before the government halted mineral ore exports since 2020.
"Natural resource downstreaming must continue. This is an example of the importance of downstreaming. Previously, nickel ore exports only reached US$ 2 billion," he explained.
Furthermore, Luhut also mentioned that Indonesia will direct downstreaming efforts toward seaweed commodities, which are expected to provide even greater benefits for the country.
"We haven't talked about seaweed yet. Indonesia is the largest country in the world for seaweed, just as it is with nickel ore," Luhut concluded.
