The United States is facing a significant wave of civil servant layoffs across various sectors. This policy is being implemented as part of the government’s efforts to reduce budget pressures and enhance bureaucratic efficiency. Thousands of government employees are now feeling the impact, raising concerns about broader economic and social consequences.
According to a CNN Indonesia report, the U.S. government, under President Donald Trump, has taken decisive steps to reduce the number of federal civil servants. This initiative aims to save up to $10 billion, approximately IDR 163 trillion.
As reported by Bloomberg Technoz, the government previously introduced a voluntary resignation program, offering employees a severance package that allowed them to continue receiving salaries until September 30, 2025. However, only 75,000 employees participated—well below the White House’s target.
Due to the low participation rate, the government has accelerated workforce reductions by terminating thousands of probationary employees. This measure is being enforced to achieve the budget efficiency goals set by the administration.
The mass layoffs have sparked outrage among federal employees. Several labor unions have filed lawsuits, arguing that the policy is arbitrary and violates federal laws, as reported by Merdeka.com on February 14, 2025.
Despite facing legal challenges and criticism, the Trump administration remains committed to these efficiency measures as part of a broader strategy to reduce the size of the federal bureaucracy and cut government spending. Several political figures have expressed support for the initiative, emphasizing the need for more efficient budget management to address future economic challenges.
