President of the United States, Donald Trump, has expressed his willingness to visit China to meet with President Xi Jinping and engage in discussions concerning foreign policy matters and economic issues.

“Absolutely,” Trump said in response to a question about whether he would consider traveling abroad to meet Xi, during an interview aired by Fox News on Friday, May 16, 2025. He added that the relationship between the United States and China is “important.”

Now serving his second term as U.S. President, Trump has repeatedly conveyed his desire to speak directly with the Chinese leader. Earlier this week, Trump even suggested that a phone conversation between him and Xi would likely take place soon, following an agreement on a temporary truce in the ongoing trade war, which had been sparked by the imposition of steep tariffs on Chinese imports.

Under the 90-day agreement, the United States agreed to reduce import tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% down to 30%. In return, China lowered its tariffs on American products to 10%.

Despite signaling his openness to dialogue with Xi Jinping, Trump underscored that his recent visits to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates were primarily intended to distance those nations from China’s influence.

“They were leaning toward China, almost as if it would become their new patron. But that’s not going to happen,” Trump stated. He went on to say that those three countries are “very important partners who should remain under our umbrella.”
